Where we are 10/19/24

Sunrise over Somalia

The plane had a few exterior cameras. This one facing the forward landing gear was fun

Our upgraded room in Cape Town had a great view of table Mountain

From the top of
Cable Mountain with fog shrouded Cape Town below

The views on the drive around the Peninsula south of Cape Town.

This wine region has two ways to travel around to the vineyards. This train and a driving shuttle keeps the wi w drinkers safe and focused

I was surprised to see that the only South African wine I tried was from the town we were staying in

Great older vineyard accommodations made it special

From the vineyard to the ocean then north over the mountains to high desert areas

Church in center of Graaf Reinet. Town is surrounded by national Park with great views and a small driving game preserve which was also fun

Looking out at the bottom of Africa with the Indian Ocean on one side and the Atlantic on the other.

We arrived in South Africa Wednesday morning after two 10 hour flights and a layover. We were still able to  travel to Table Mountain get a great dinner at less than half what we were expecting to pay since the exchange rate is in our favor.

Thursday we walked around a beach with Penguins, went to the Cape of Good Hope, drove along the scary coast road past the 12 apostle range, and by late afternoon made it to our destination in the Franschhoek wine region.

Friday we drove through the Beautiful mountains And farmland down to the coastal town of Knysna. Today we drove back up over the mountains to the desert plain ending in Graaf Reinet.

The downside of so much driving is so much driving! The upside is really seeing the people and places in detail. Also stopping to look at ostrich, tortoise, meerkat, wildebeest, springboks, elephant, baboons and monkeys.

Meeting good people, eating well, enjoying good wine and trying to get enough sleep have been our major goals (i’ll have to add getting larger clothes) as we continue to work our way toward Kruger national Park and the self guided Safari.

A lot of misconceptions about Africa have been falling by the wayside as we have felt comfortable, safe and amazed at the beautiful landscape that’s around us. Also the highways are in great shape for this kind of a trip

Since the blog is just starting Bali, we thought we would catch folks up and let everyone know we are safe in Africa. Lots of details to follow.
